How Long Does a Backyard Project Really Take?

Most homeowners assume the timeline is just the build. In reality, the on-site work is often the shortest and most predictable part. The full timeline, from your first call to standing in the finished space, usually runs eight to sixteen weeks depending on scope and season.

The phases, honestly

Here is roughly how the time breaks down on a typical mid-to-large Houston project. Smaller courtyards compress this; full backyard builds stretch it.

1. 01Design and budget, one to three weeks. Site visit, design, and a firm scope and number you both agree on before anything is ordered.
2. 02Permitting and materials, two to four weeks. Permits for gas, electrical, and structure, plus lead time on stone, pavers, and appliances. This is where most of the invisible waiting lives.
3. 03Build, four to nine weeks on site. Demo, base and drainage, hardscape, structures, utilities, kitchen, and planting and lighting last.
4. 04Final walkthrough, a few days. We walk it together, correct any punch-list details, and hand over the warranty.

Where delays actually come from

The two things that move a schedule are weather and rework. Houston rain can stall grading and base work, which is why we build float into the plan rather than promising a date we cannot hold. Rework happens when a job is designed as it goes instead of up front, so the single biggest thing you can do to keep a project on time is to lock the design and scope before the crew shows up.
